You might expect a rainy day to dampen young campers’ spirits, but at William Lawrence Camp the boys will look forward to wet weather. When storm clouds roll in, the fun will move into Centennial Lodge, built this year to celebrate the 100 birthday of this New Hampshire camp overlooking Lake Winnipesauke.
The camp needed a timber frame with no interior posts to accommodate the lively goings-on inside the lodge, including active games as well as crafts.
Our scissors trusses of Douglas fir handle the load with ease and look handsome as well, marching down the length of the hall from the field stone fireplace.
The opposite end of the room has a special function. What would camp be without talent shows? To define a stage area we used a king post, which extends upward from a crossbeam to the apex of the triangular truss, and prevents sagging where long spans are needed. The tiebeam here can perform the additional duty of holding up the stage’s curtain, adding to the theatrical excitement.
Memories will be made, looking out at the vista or looking in the lighted windows at the timber frame beneath towering pines. Day is done, gone the sun. From the lakes from the hills, from the sky…
