back next In 1988, we were hired by the National Park Service to build three sets of gates for the locks on the Nashua River in Lowell National Park, Lowell, Mass. The locks are called the lower, middle and guard locks.

The gates are massive. Above right: Ridge stands at the bottom of the gates for the lower lock, which are 22' high. Below: Photo of the guard lock, so named because they hold the Nashua River from flooding the city of Lowell. The photo was taken before the gates were replaced, which had to be placed by a crane. They weigh 8 tons each.
